"Pet" Peeves.

OK this week was fairly slow at work. I was on day shifts so I got all the lame calls. You know the calls like my neighbors dog peed on my lawn. I think one of my biggest pet peeves is the way people deal with each other, and how they use the police as a tool for them to annoy there neighbors.

Let me explain what I mean. There is a man in the county that really despises his neighbor. I don't really know why. The neighbor thinks that it's because she told him no when he tried to come on to her. Well anyway this man calls me the other day. He says I am sick and tired of my neighbors dog coming onto my lawn. I ask him is the dog mean or dangerous. He says no, I don't think the dog has a mean bone in his body. OK I say is the dog crapping on your lawn or causing damage to your property. No he says. I just don't want it over here. I explain to him that there is no leash law in our County. I tell him that i can however go and talk to the owner and tell them to keep there dog to themselves. Then he goes into a tirade about his neighbor. He tells me that his wife goes over there all the time and he is sick of her. He says that he wants me to really yell at her and tell her that if her dog comes back over he is going to shoot it.

OK so the guy is mad at his neighbor. Not sure why, not sure what his wife going over there has to do with it but now at this point I just don't care. I can see that he is simply using me as something to annoy or cause more problems with this neighbor. I go to the neighbor and speak to her. I tell her she should probably keep a better eye on her dog. She goes nuts, yelling and ranting about the man. Then she says she will keep her dog in.

After going over there several times i realize that this will never end unless I do something. I tell this man that he needs to calm down. I try to explain to him that if he doesnt like his neighbor he can move to BFE. (means out in the middle of no where in not so nice terms). Now by this time however the neighbor has decided to do the same thing, and she has started calling the cops on him for everything she can think of. So I go and tell her basically the same thing. I tell her to keep her dog at home and to stop using the police as way to piss off your neighbor.

I'm not the best story teller, but I think my point comes across. We live next to people because we choose to. Let try to get along. It takes two people to keep an argument going and if you can't get along don't call me for your piddly stupid little stuff. Unfortunately people let this piddle little stuff grow to big stuff, and then I get involved and usually someone goes to jail.

  1. Love the bear cub photos! Really interesting. Do you have to stop being in contact with them because they could be a danger once they get large enough, or since they were raised by people can they be safe like dogs? just curious.Mike

  3. Sorry you are used as a tool in petty neighborhood greivances. I have always believed a community should have the utmost respect for the men and women who keep their families safe at night, while they sleep in their beds!!You have a beautiful family. Such a blessing to be surrounded by so many people who love you.xoxoxo

  4. Well I think that you did the right thing. The man needs to get the crap beat out of him though. Why do people think that they can solve everything with shooting somthing that did nothing to them. Could he shoot the dog without getting in to trouble?

  5. It would be frustrating to have to deal with people like that all the time! Reading this made me think of dealing with little children- they do the same types of things. Congrats on Best of MSN! Thank you for everything you guys do (minus the ticket part). ;)Katie

  7. sounds like something they should handle on jerry springer...lol. came across your site on...where else? best of msn! congrats on that one! neighbors can be something else. i grew up in a small town with a total of one police officer, sometimes two, depending on if the city wanted to hire another one. anyway, these guys usually had a barney fife complex and my mom had this one neighbor who just despised her and he was paranoid 24/7! i couldn\'t even begin to tell you how many times the cops were called by him over stupid stuff! it was enough to make you laugh till you cried! my neighbor\'s are all great but i am still one to keep to myself. i just don\'t understand why, if people don\'t like their neighbor\'s, then just totally leave them alone. but anyway, you\'ll have that! great space you got here! love the pics! hope you have a great week...maybe you\'ll have lots of interesting stories to tell us! lol. *peace*~aron~

  8. This would be regarding people using us "Cops" to annoy their neighbors and waist our time. I too am in law enforcement, Deputy Sheriff to be exact. I can relate totally. I got a call last week from a frequent flyer who wanted her sister charged for "Breaking into" this person\'s apartment and stealing two pizzas. I was on three hours of sleep pulling a ten hour shift. I kindly advised this subject that if I even lifted pen to paper, her sister would be charged with Burg 3rd, Class D Felon in my state, and further explained to this subject that upon conviction, her sister could possibly do 15 years for two pizzas. The tune was quickly turned and she was gonna talk to her sister about getting money for the two pizzas. So, Brother, I am with ya on the pet peeves. Also, at work now, Send me a link to this blog to my email. It is awesome.

  12. When I worked as a dispatcher, we got that all the time. Not to mention the Nosey Nellies who cal to see where the ambulance or police are going since they just passed her house, or the parents who call because their child won\'t go to school. I agree about the neighbor thing. We have a creepy guy who just moved in across the street. He\'s creepy because we actually bought our house from him when he moved away to another state. He then moved back into a house a few miles away, but then literally SWAPPED houses with the people across the street so he could be back across from his old house. He\'s creepy and sits out on his porch all day/every day watching our house. Almost like legal stalking but we ignore him.

  13. Hey, I feel for you guys. When my neighbor started letting his two-past-bites (other people) aggressive bulldog out of the fence every morning (to defecate off his property) and the dog chose the spot between my walkway and car door for his toilet area, I tried to shoo it away, as I always left for work at that same time every morning. However, the dog had claimed the land and would growl and rush me each morning, neccessitating the addition of a ball bat by the front gate daily, for passage, and a shoe scrubber. I repeatedly called the neighbor and very politely (my family claims that I am too accomodating) asked them to keep their dog fenced, as my shoe costs were becoming exorbitant and my students had begun to find my aroma offensive. I did not call the police because I felt that I would have these neighbors for eternity and the police should not be bothered. However, the morning that I walked out and caught the gentleman next door grinning as he opened the gate for \'Bojangles\',I waited for the dog to rush me, and then I dropped my book satchel and swinging the bat wildly and growling, I chased the dog right through his own gate. The neighbor stood there with his mouth hanging open at the spectacle, a dignified professional lady such as myself doing such a thing, and I pointed the bat at him like a ruler and said, "If this happens tomorrow, that will be you!" Well, the dog problem was solved, but my family\'s problems had just begun. The neighbors began to fabricate all types of reasons and complaints to send the police to my house, harassing my visitors, children, husband, and myself. Our local fellows, who went to school with the people next door and hunted with them weekends, took a long time and the threat of a lawsuit before they acknowledged that the neighbors could be prevaricating a little, or a lot, actually. One time, the police even insisted on searching our house, no warrant, on the lady\'s belief that we had stolen her dog! We never called the police once, in spite of their penned up, twenty hounds incessant howling twenty feet from our bedroom window...we moved our bedroom to the other end of the house! Our patience prevailed though...the lady next door yesterday, when caught peering through the bushes into our garage, actually smiled, kind of, and raised a hand and said, "How y\'all doing?" to which I replied,"Fine, how about you?" Perhaps we\'ll be swapping recipes one day!

  14. Wow JustSalem, Sounds like you have you have more patients than I do. I commend your working to get along with the neighbors. I think if the dog is vicious or doing damage to your property then you have a right to complain or do something about it. I know it\'s different in our County than most places. Most places have a dog catcher or a City Ordinance officer that can help deal with the dog problems. It\'s amazing to me that Dogs can create such problems. However it is almost always there owners that are the real problems.

  17. I have enjoyed your space. Great videos too. Thanks too for what you do everyday. While everyone is running from the crisis you are running into it. I too walked in those shoes at a bit different level. Retired Sheriff\'s lieutenant. Never worked the streets, but spent my career working adult detention. You locked them up and I was responsible for keeping them there until their court cases were resolved. Again, thanks for letting me sleep better each night knowing the men and women of law enforcement are protecting us.

  18. Love the site!!! It\'s funny how the BS is the same no matter where were at. My husband used to be a Deputy, my mom was a dispatcher, and I was a jailer. We are no longer in the profession, and there are only a few things to miss about it.Keep up the great work, on the site and as a Deputy.

  19. Brother I feel your pain! I actually was dispatched to an address in the town where I work because a kid wouldn\'t do his homework! Ridiculous! I\'m glad to know that I\'m not the only one who gets the stupid neighbors fighting calls. "The neighbor is mowing his yard too loud!" Or the famous start: "Well, about five years ago..." Hang in there!Strength and Honor,Aytch
